Murder at La Marionette Hotel (A Romantic Comedy Murder Mystery)

Murder at La Marionette Hotel

A contemporary romantic comedy murder mystery

When Lorne St. Patrick was young, like all kids, he dreamed of being a superstar. But he had something the other kids didn’t. An incredible voice, a talent for writing songs and fingertips that could coax exquisite notes from an acoustic guitar.
It wasn’t an easy road, but with hard work and patience, he had made it. But someone was trying to sabotage his success in the worst way possible. By murdering his fans.
Tennyson Astin was a lawyer, she’d become a lawyer, she admitted to her friend Detective Sergeant Aaran Mulaney, because when she was young she’d had no direction and had allowed her parents to coax her into it. What she really wanted to do, was write mystery novels. So with her background in law, and her new friendship with the local police force who allowed her to ride-along on their quiet nights, so she could gain an understanding of police procedure, she was well on her way to finishing her first novel.

Then came Lorne. The auburn haired singer with hazel eyes and the voice of an angel. Could he really be a murderer? The bodies were piling up. But with his almost angelic good looks and playful sense of humor, it hardly seemed possible.
Tenn and Aaran have been assigned to watch the rising star’s every move. But when another murder occurs while he is under their surveillance, that he couldn’t possibly have committed, Tenn agrees to pose as his fiancée during his stay in Madison City’s La Marionette hotel in the hope that they can smoke out the real killer. But will they be able to do that before one of them becomes the latest victim? And will performing in Madison City’s forties style dinner theater production of Murder at La Marionette lure out the killer or will someone else become the next victim?
An Irish singer, an American lawyer/wannabe mystery writer, a large and loveable English Mastiff named Harvey, three detectives and one very clever villain with an ax to grind make up this story.

How much is too much, information that is!

I always worry a little when I post a new synopsis if I am giving away too much information about the story or not quite enough to give a full impression of the true nature of the story. Finding a balance between spoilers and being too brief isn't easy. For example, in the synopsis for my book Gems (It's not about diamonds), although it is a story about a couple who come together over helping a sick little girl, it does have a very happy ending, contains lots of playful moments and has an interesting twist toward the end.
Frankly, my favorite character is Oliver the butler, what do you think?

What is romance?

What is romance? I think it varies from person to person, but personally, romance and humor go hand in hand. You have to be able to laugh at yourself and life in general sometimes. Of course, it does help if you don't laugh at inappropriate moments, oops yes, I do have a tendency to do that! But laughing when times get tough can strengthen a relationship. I've been married for twenty-seven years and the goofiest times are my favorite memories.

A Contemporary Countess

A former American foster child and a twenty-first century English Earl. What could they possibly have in common? They're about to find out!

A mischievous and sensual contemporary English Earl. A history loving American lottery winner, a potential marriage of convenience, lovable estate characters, the Earl's romantically inclined sister and her three playful old school friends, a Halloween ball, secret passages and ghosts stories, all make up the novel A Contemporary Countess.
Here is a longer preview:
When Darielle St.James became the sole winner of New York's biggest lottery jackpot in history, she knew her life was about to change. But even she had no idea how great that change would be.
After using her new found wealth to help her closest friends and her two foster brothers and sister, she set about assessing her own goals. Hounded by the curious press and fortune hunters, she moved into a small secure apartment building overlooking Central Park, and started work on her first novel. Now she had both the time and the means to write.
Online research for her novel, leads her to the estate of Adam Darfield, the Earl of Avanleigh, a struggling English aristocrat whose name is oddly similar to that of her Regency hero. Adam, she discovers has only recently inherited the title. He and his sister Susie run Avanleigh Estate, which is sadly in need of funds due to the enormous death taxes imposed at the loss of their father.
Dari's childhood dream of living in a beautiful stately home suddenly comes to the forefront, and she writes to Adam with an interesting proposal. She would like to come to Avanleigh for six weeks to write her novel in the historic setting for which she is willing to pay a large fee, giving them a chance to get to know each other, and if all goes well, to marry. Citing arranged marriages from the past, from Jennie Jerome to Consuelo Vanderbilt, Dari makes a good case.
Adam, stunned at the unusual request, is encouraged by his romantically inclined sister Susie to take Dari up on the offer. Six weeks will give him a chance to get to know the beautiful young American, and the fee she has offered will help with the taxes. While he is not committed to anything, marrying her would ensure the financial future of the estate for many generations to come. It was after all, what his own ancestors had done.
Dari arrives at Avanleigh to find both Adam and Susie are easy going and fun to be with. Things are going incredibly well. But as time goes on, both Dari and Adam, each begin to think the other is just a little too good to be true and are both afraid to hope that what is developing between them could be real.
When Susie's quirky and playful aristocratic friends from her childhood boarding school years arrive at the estate for their annual vacation, Dari discovers the truth. Adam has a reputation as an aristocratic playboy. From his youthful nickname the Voracious Viscount, to the current epithet the Randy Earl, his nicknames are numerous. Furious at her discovery, Dari confronts Adam, who reluctantly admits his past. But Adam has decided he adores the unpretentious Dari, and he convinces her to stay.
Dari is head over heels in love with Adam and loves the estate, with its historic connections to the infamous Henry the Eighth, ghost stories, hidden passageways and long time easy going staff. And Adam has awakened a sensual side in her that she did not know she possessed.
On the eve of her wedding, Dari and her new friends are celebrating her bachelorette party in the historic 'Henry Room' at the estate Dower House where the infamous king himself once slept, when they discover something that changes everything.

Miranda's Story. 'The Substitute'
When Miranda Courtright heard that her teenage crush, next door neighbor Trace Evans was returning home 'to roost', as he jokingly put it, she knew just what he had in mind. He wanted to settle down with the girl next door-her. But Miranda finds herself in a pickle. While in his absence Miranda has allowed her four nosey older brothers to believe that Trace was still the object of her affections, it's not exactly true.

Trace's Story. 'Second in Line'
Trace Evans had convinced himself that returning home to Rainesville after an absence of several years to marry his cute next door neighbor was the right thing to do. But nothing had turned out quite the way he had expected.
Seated at the bar in The Golden Saloon, he discovers an engaging blonde with a quirky sense of humor...but there is something oddly familiar about the beautiful stranger who stirs a memory of a long lost love...

Eric's Story. 'His Brothers' Keeper'
Eric Courtright the oldest of the siblings had always been the responsible one, so when his behavior suddenly becomes uncharacteristically erratic and he punches out his younger brother Ben on a trip to The Golden Saloon, his brothers are mystified, until they realize where Eric's attention is focused.

Ben's Story. 'Next in Line'
Ben Courtright, the youngest and according to the local female population, the cutest of the siblings is tired of the dating game. With his good looks and boyish charm, he began dating early, but it had become old really fast and very repetitive.

Jay's Story. 'One for the Books'
Jay Courtright is the most outspoken and volatile of the siblings. After Mirry, Ben and Eric move out, Cash and Jay are left to their own devices. As the middle siblings they were known as 'Double Trouble' when they were young. When Mirry who is heavily pregnant with her second child comes to the ranch house to discover the usually pristine home in total disarray, she renames them 'The two little pigs' and hires an adorable but feisty Italian cook/housekeeper.

Cash's Story. 'Last to Fall'
When Cash finds himself living alone at the ranch house after his three brothers and little sister have moved out, at first he enjoys the peace and quiet and a little time to think his own thoughts uninterrupted. Until Mirry calls to invite him to a concert at The Golden Saloon where an English group The Hardingtons are performing. The lead singer is a cutie...

The Rainesville Ranchers. Who's your favorite character?

Have you read the Rainesville Ranchers? Who is your favorite character? Is it the stoic but gorgeous Royce, the ranch foreman, Trace the naughty but hurt neighbor, Eric the very responsible older brother, or Ben the playful youngest one? How about the two middle brothers, Jay the volatile one, or Cash the hold out, and also the last one in the family to find love until he's blindsided by a young English singer?
How about the girls? Miranda sure knows how to deal with her bossy brothers. Or Darcey, who runs The Golden Saloon and is used to being independent and taking care of herself. Or Isabella, the Italian chef with more than enough personality to keep the brothers and the ranch hands in line. How about Arianna who is sure she isn't about to fall for a naughty playful cowboy, but does anyway. Or perhaps it's Laney the one with the unusual past, or maybe Viola, the young English singer who finds more than she bargained for on her tour of the US.
I'd love to know!

The Menace (A Romantic Comedy)

The Menace

A Romantic Comedy Novella

When Javier Rodin a.k.a. ‘The Menace’ is injured on the last day of filming his latest movie he is taken to St Mark’s hospital. Other than a small bump on the head and the fact that his crazed fans have shredded his clothes in an effort to get a piece of him as a souvenir, he is fine. Exhausted, he readily takes the doctor up on his offer to rest for a couple of hours in a recently vacated room. Known worldwide for the series of brutal action movies he stars in, women continually throw themselves at him expecting him to fulfill their ‘take me’ fantasies. And he’d willingly done so for a while. But that had quickly become old. What he wanted was something real, a little conversation with someone who recognized he was an actor not the character he portrayed, and some soft, slow, sweet lovemaking. But with a face as brutally scarred and recognizable as his, he knew he wasn’t likely to get it.

Millicent Riley, is a natural born optimist, despite the day to day challenges being dyslexic often provides. The daughter of newspaper magnate Vincent Riley and sponsor of the Riley wing at St. Mark’s hospital, Millie thoroughly enjoys her volunteer work there. She is cheerful and easy going, and the perfect candidate to chat with patients and put them at ease. Assured that coma patients can hear, she is sent to talk to the comatose patient in room thirteen, it turns out to be her lucky number, because that patient has already been transferred-and in his place is ‘The Menace’ who is simply trying to take a nap.

Though he’s annoyed at the interruption at first, Javier soon realizes that Millie may be the very best thing that has ever happened to him. She’s sweet, she’s cute, she’s sensual and she is going to be his. And while Millie may think she is a plain Jane, Javier disagrees, he thinks she is adorable and can’t wait to get to know her better. Fortunately for him, Millie is convinced that the hulking brooding Javier is the sexiest man she’s ever met.

But when Millie’s self-absorbed father tries to set her up with his young co-worker, will Javier allow him to derail their budding romance?

The story behind the story - A Contemporary Countess

Today for my story behind the story I'm going to talk about A Contemporary Countess, but first here's a remnider of the synopsis (if you've read it before just scroll down a little).

A Contemporary Countess
A contemporary playful and sensual novel of approximately 51,000 words
A former American foster child and a twenty-first century English Earl, what could they possibly have in common? They are about to find out.
When Darielle St. James became the sole winner of New York’s biggest lottery jackpot in history, she knew her life was about to change. But even she had no idea how great the change would be.

She began by using her new found wealth to help her closest friends, her two foster brothers and sister, and Mom Miriam the lovely woman who had been her foster mother. And then set about assessing her own goals. Hounded by the curious press and fortune hunters, she moved into a small secure apartment building overlooking Central Park, and started work on her first novel. Now she had both the time and the means to write.

The story behind the story
This may contain spoilers if you haven't yet read the book
A Contemporary Countess

We’ve all wondered at some time or other what we would do if we won the lottery. Whenever the lottery jackpots rise to epic proportions we find ourselves rushing out to buy a few tickets and having those chats with friends and family about how exactly we would make our dreams come true. A Contemporary Countess is Dari’s story of winning the lottery and following her dreams.
I visited many stately homes growing up in England, and as a child always wished I was a titled lady and spun many fantasies of living there, but I think as I grew older one of my favorite daydreams was to be allowed to simply spend a day there, alone. To walk the ancient halls and go behind the red velvet ropes that held back the tourists and experience, touch, and enjoy everything that once belonged to some favorite historic characters and truly feel the history as Dari is able to do at Avanleigh.
My favorite stately homes were Chatsworth House and Hardwick Hall in Derbyshire, both have been used in several movies. You might recognize Chatsworth from a recent production of Pride and Prejudice staring Keira Knightley.

Dari has a particular fascination with Henry the Eighth, something I own to myself. And feels he was maligned by tabloid historians, amusing Adam with her adamant defense of the most notorious king in British history. Recent studies have shown that it is very likely that Henry was a diabetic, hence the out of control weight and ulcerated leg that wouldn’t heal, in an era that didn’t understand the disease. Henry’s sister Margaret who married James the 1V of Scotland, was also a known diabetic.
Henry is usually portrayed as glutenous, when he may have simply been a victim of a disease that didn't properly process, but instead stored his food.
Henry is known through England for the magnificent castles, fortresses and ships that he built. No, he was no saint, but he was a man of many sides. Dari simply chooses to see mainly his good side. The athletic young King who fell in love easily, led his armies to war, wrote poetry, laughed a lot, played tennis and built fortresses that still exist today. I like to think of him that way too.

'More wives than mistresses' this was often said about Henry. How true is it? I don't think we will ever really know. His most well known mistress Bessie Blount gave him the son Henry Fitzroy, who is sadly reputed to have died in his late teens though there are several other stories circulating that he may have lived on. (Fitzroy was a term commonly used to define an illegitimate child of a king.)
Dari is a natural born optimist, always making the best of everything around her. I chose to make her foster family sweet in this story, mainly because I have worked with children for much of my adult life in private homes and for a while in a children's home. I've met many of the folks that care for children in the system and have seen a trend in romance novels in the last few years where a child is reputed to have been 'tossed from foster home to foster home', or had bad foster parents. In many cases the foster parents are true angels and deserve so much better than this odd reputation they seem to have acquired through fictional depiction in movies and books. They do it because they love children. Dari has her own little family, a wonderful foster mom, two foster brothers and a sister.
The Estate Characters. Well, from Tom, the head ranger, to Alma and Freda the two cleaners, the estate employees always see the estate as belonging to them as much as the owners. Throughout history generations of the same families often lived and worked on the same estate. Usually developing a friendly camaraderie with the owners within certain boundaries. Those boundaries are much less clear today than they would have been in the past. Hence Tom became almost a second father to Adam after his own passed away.
Anything you'd like to add, feel free to post a comment.
I'll be adding some more thoughts myself later.

A Christmas Date. The story behind the story

The story behind the story today...A Christmas Date. I'm so thrilled to have had so many likes and some lovely reviews on this story on Amazon. Thank you so much. I'm so glad so many people downloaded it. Here's a brief reminder of the synopsis in case you haven't read it yet.

A Christmas Date
A sensual and sweet contemporary Christmas love story of approximately 9,200 words.
When tall aloof business executive Lucas Hart and small voluptuous florist Angelina Makepeace are thrown together on a surprise blind date by their crazy matchmaking friends, they are both equally horrified. They have absolutely nothing in common.
But when wintry weather and circumstances beyond their control repeatedly place them in each other’s path during the holiday season, they begin to realize that their friends might not be quite so crazy after all.
Admit it, we've all set up our friends at one time or another, when you're in a new relationship, you just can't help yourself! It was particularly tempting for me (many years ago) when newly married to a Marine and he had loads of single friends! Unfortunately it didn't ever quite work out the way it did for Lucas and Angelina in the end. In fact that is exactly where Angelina gets her remark "You don't have to spend the rest of your life with someone, just a pleasant evening." When she is reprimanding Lucas for his bad attitude. Some of the dates we set up couldn't even manage to tolerate each other for an evening! Needless to say, we don't matchmake anymore.

Following Your Dreams

One of my favorite things about my character Darielle St. James in A Contemporary Countess is that she isn't afraid to follow her dreams. After winning the biggest single lottery prize in history...something on all our minds at the moment as the latest powerball reaches epic proportions...she embarks upon a journey to try to make her childhood dreams come true. Writing her own romance novel and living in a large stately home and becoming a true English Countess, complete with eons of family history, it is especially important for Dari who is a New York foster child, and whose foster siblings are all embarking upon their own quests to fulfill their dreams. Libby has recently married and is heavily pregnant with her first child, and Richard and Jason her foster brothers are now Army Rangers.
What are your dreams? What would you do if you were lucky enough to win the lottery?

A Mystical Fantasy Duet

A Mystical Fantasy Duet (of Love Stories)

My latest duet, a little paranormal fun, with as always a happy ending!

Two short sensual stories totaling approximately 15,500 words
Fascinella (A Pixie Story)
In search of a little relaxation after working on a difficult case, attorney Gregory Tarquin took off down the winding country roads of Appenlea on his brand new Regal Eagle. This was the smoothest sleekest and fastest bike he had ever owned. He’d waited months for the special order to arrive.
Carried away with his new dream machine, and speeding down the empty roads, enjoying the feel of the wind in his hair and the powerful bike beneath his thighs as the stresses of his day to day life begin melting away, the very last thing he expected was to run into a pixie.
Driving too fast to stop on a dime, he ran headlong into the side of the long smooth pink limousine that carried the heavenly creature as it crossed the first intersection.
Fascinella DeVita is fascinated by the handsome injured human, and with the aid of her hulking chauffeur named Five takes him to her home to recover.
With her platinum blonde hair, lavender eyes and uncompromising attitude, she is both beautiful and powerful, but there is so much more to the always pink clad sparkling Fascinella and her world than Greg could ever have anticipated. She claims that magicians are pixies, mechanics are sprites and she can make crop circles simply by using the power of her mind. Convinced he is simply having a delusion from a bump on the head when he fell from his bike, and unsure whether he will wake up in the hospital or the morgue, Greg goes along with the fantasy and unexpectedly falls in love with the beautiful sensual pixie...

 Sensations (A Psychic Touch Story)
Sam Givens has a gift. At least he tried to think of it that way. Sam was a writer. His research had led him to many places and into many subjects. He wrote mystery novels, with a unique twist, a combination of eastern and western philosophy, meditation, and healing practices. He’d learned to put into practice some of those methods for himself. Tapping into his sixth sense, he’d developed the ability to heal.
Only his next door neighbor Gin, knows of his abilities, she’s been his friend, neighbor and confidant since childhood. Sam is able to suppress his abilities when he is writing a novel, secluding himself in his house and tuning out everything but his work. But when his mind is no longer cluttered with characters and plot lines, his senses suddenly stir to life and his abilities resurface with a vengeance, often stronger than before.
With the finale of his latest book and reawakening of his senses comes the revelation that he can discern what others are thinking and feeling. Gin his cute neighbor, is in love with him. But when the sudden rapid progression of his abilities has him needing Gin’s help, they go for a quiet retreat at his family’s mountain cabin, where he is able to get to know Gin in ways he’d hadn’t dreamed of until recently...

Taming Theodore

Taming Theodore

 An erotic love story

Ten years ago Theodore Jansen was heartbroken to overhear Dresden Carter, his high school sweetheart, discussing him with her friends the night before her high school graduation. He is devastated to find that she does not plan on staying in their home town of Hokenberry, New Jersey, to be with him, but is going away to college in Germany for four years. Not only that, but she makes fun of him and his homely future plans.

Numbly, Theo, who had planned to propose the following night escorts her politely through her graduation ceremony and post graduation ball as promised, and never contacts her again. Instead he takes a chance on making something of his own future. He mails off the wooden sculptures that until now had only been a hobby, to a New York City gallery and is stunned to receive a quick response.

Ten years later, Theo is no longer the soft hearted young man who had once been teasingly nicknamed Teddy. He’s a well known wealthy New York City artist with a bevy of willing female followers. So when he receives an invitation to his high school reunion, he is at first reluctant to attend, but the chance to vanquish a few of his youthful demons—and curiosity about Dresden who is on the organizing committee—gets the better of him. But things are not quite what he might have imagined, and love holds some unexpected surprises in store for Theo.

Author note: Taming Theodore is a little different from my usual more playful romances, it has a slightly harsher tone and contains a ménage, something I don’t usually write. But Theo has his demons to overcome and when your characters speak to you, it is always a good idea for a writer to listen. But don’t worry, Theo finds his own happy ending.

Cat and Mouse (A Regency Sex Comedy)

When his adorable neighbor Lucy Widden came upon him in his youth during a tryst with a willing milkmaid in a local hayfield, Lord Alistair Abingdon knew she would never forgive him. And he’d been right. Now many years later, he has returned home, and is determined to win Lucy for himself. He just isn’t sure how to go about it. He’d been home for several weeks and she hadn’t paid him a single visit. He was aware she would soon be going to London for the season. She would have to talk to him there wouldn’t she?
But his plans are all thrown awry, when Lucy is thrown from her horse, and Lucy’s father Sir Widden sends for him with a very special request. Marry Lucy immediately. Because Lucy has apparently lost not only her memory in the fall, but something else every debutante who wished to make an advantageous match needed. Her hymen. The bumpy ride on her spooked horse had cost her the ability to proclaim herself a true virgin.
If someone had handed him everything he had ever wanted on a silver platter Alistair could not have been more thrilled. Lucy was going to be his. But because he was well aware of Lucy’s mischievous spirit, he did not for an instant believe that she had lost her memory. And that could only mean one thing. Lucy wanted him and did not know how to say so. As for the other thing, well, time would tell. And he looked forward to finding out.
